Ross Fairweather, Carolyn McPhee and Jennifer Martinez Sillars Join Compass Chambers

We are delighted to welcome Ross Fairweather, Carolyn McPhee and Jennifer Martinez Sillars to Compass after they all called to the Bar today.

Prio to calling to the Bar, Ross worked in Anderson Strathern’s litigation department before joining Clyde & Co, working in their catastrophic injuries and large loss team. In 2022, he was granted extended rights of audience as a Solicitor Advocate. He has appeared on several occasions in both the Court of Session and the Sheriff Courts.

Ross has significant experience of handling high valued and complex personal injuries actions, predominantly arising out of road traffic accidents, workplace accidents, and accidents on occupied premises. He has typically handled claims involving fatalities and catastrophic injuries. He has also represented the Scottish Ministers interests on several occasions at Fatal Accident Inquiries.

In private practice, Ross acted predominantly for insurers, self-insured organisations, executive agencies of the Scottish Government, and statutory corporations. During devilling, Ross gained significant experience of pursuing a wide variety of personal injuries actions and medical negligence actions. This experience enables Ross to act for both pursuer and defender clients.

Carolyn had 13 years’ experience as a solicitor at leading firms before calling to the Bar.

Carolyn specialises in Clinical Negligence having practised in this area throughout her time as a solicitor. She has extensive experience across all types of clinical negligence cases including several high-value birth injury claims and has been involved in cases in the Court of Session and the All-Scotland Personal Injury Court.

During devilling Carolyn has gained more experience across the wider reparation field, particularly in relation to personal injury and product liability as well as professional negligence and professional discipline cases.

As a solicitor in private practice Jennifer advised individuals, corporate entities and governmental bodies on a range of commercial matters. She has experience of representing commercial clients, working as part of a team acting on high value commercial transactions across a variety of sectors.

Immediately prior to coming to the Bar, Jennifer gained experience of working within the public sector by working as a Procurator Fiscal Depute in Crown Office.

She has extensive courtroom experience, having prosecuted a wide range of criminal offences at summary and sheriff and jury level including fraud and cases falling under the Road Traffic Act 1988. She has also been responsible for the preparation and conduct of prosecutions under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 and has conducted confiscation hearings and cash seizures.

Jennifer has an in-depth knowledge of criminal and corporate law and has a particular interest in white-collar, financial and regulatory crime.

During devilling she gained exposure to personal injury and clinical negligence work. She has routinely dealt with cases which engage the ECHR, including protester cases, and the UNCRC.

Compass Practice Manager Gavin Herd said “We are thrilled that Ross, Carolyn and Jennifer chose to join Compass and we warmly welcome them. They come with significant experience across Reparation, Clinical Negligence, Regulatory Crime and Inquiries which makes them a great fit with our core areas of practice. We are sure they will quickly develop busy and rewarding practices and we wish them all the best in their careers at the Bar.”
