Richard called to the bar in 2023, having practised in reparation for 11 years at Clyde & Co. 

He has experience of high value and complex claims, primarily involving serious life-changing injuries and fatalities.

He has a breadth of expertise across the personal injury sector. He has acted in disputes in the fields of employers’ liability, occupiers’ liability, road traffic accidents, occupational disease, and aviation. He has experience of accidents abroad and foreign claims including jurisdictional issues. He has represented the MIB. He has also advised on insurance coverage and policy response.

Representative Cases

Glasgow City Council v First Glasgow 2020 SLT 75 and Glasgow City Council v First Glasgow 2022 SLT 1640
As instructing solicitor in vast collective recovery claims stemming from the Glasgow bin lorry disaster. The dispute was whether an employment reference for the bin lorry driver was provided to the pursuers, and if so then if it was a negligent misstatement.

Fiona Burnett v Inter Hanover & Others 2021 SC (UKSC) 1
As instructing solicitor in Supreme Court decision concerning the interpretation of two exclusion clauses within a public liability policy, in a dispute about the death of a nightclub patron who was killed by a doorman. 

Colin Mather v easyJet [2023] CSIH 8
As instructing solicitor in case concerning the application of article 17 of the Montreal Convention 1999 and the delineation of responsibilities between carriers, contractors and airports during disembarkation and embarkation. The dispute arose from a serious injury sustained by a disabled passenger whilst disembarking from an aircraft at Hamburg Airport.

As instructing solicitor in long-running health and safety prosecution and various civil claims arising from fatal outbreak of Legionnaire’s disease in south-west Edinburgh in 2012.
