PRACTICE

Richard came to the Bar having had a varied practice as a solicitor. He trained at Balfour and Manson before moving to work in litigation at Drummond Miller, where he worked for four years. He has practiced in a wide variety of areas, principally:

  • Professional and Medical Negligence
  • Personal Injury
  • Judicial Review
  • Commercial Litigation

Richard is already instructed by many of the large Edinburgh firms specialising in reparation, as well as a variety of other firms. He has conducted litigation in the Court of Session, Sheriff Court and in various tribunals.

Reported Cases:

Moore v The Scottish Daily Record and Sunday Mail 2009 SC 178; 2009 SLT 27 - A decision of five judges concerning the vires of Courts penalising parties for late settlement of appeals 

Richard is a tutor in both Civil Court Practice at the Edinburgh University Diploma, and on the WS Society's Professional Competence Course.

SEMINARS AND PUBLICATIONS

Richard has, since coming to the bar, given seminars concerning various issues of reparation law and damages, both to Update and to the Compass Reparation Conference.

Prior to coming to the Bar, he gave seminars in Medical Negligence Law to the Scottish Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (2006); and to the Bled Forum in Slovenia (2004).

Richard is a contributor to Green's Litigation Styles on matters of personal injury and clinical negligence.  

He has recently been appointed as editor of the Mental Health Chapter of Green's Human Rights loose-leaf publication.
